Luděk Mikloško arrived at West Ham United in February 1990 as a relatively unknown goalkeeper from Banik Ostrava in his native Czechoslovakia. He quickly established himself as a reliable last line of defence under manager Billy Bonds, stepping in during a period of transition for the club. His calm presence and shot-stopping ability helped stabilise the back line and played a crucial role in the team’s push for promotion back to the top flight in 1991. Over the following seasons, Mikloško’s consistency and leadership from the goalmouth became central to West Ham’s defensive organisation, earning him recognition as Hammer of the Year in 1991.

Throughout his eight years at Upton Park, the Czech international made 373 appearances across all competitions without ever finding the net as a goalkeeper. He was instrumental in another promotion campaign in 1993, helping the side return to the Premier League where he continued to perform at a high level against the country’s top attackers. Fans adored his towering frame and dependable performances, often chanting his name with the playful line about coming from near Moscow, which led to his affectionate nickname Ludo. This connection with the supporters turned him into a genuine cult hero at the club, even as the team navigated the challenges of top-division football.

Mikloško left West Ham in 1998 to join Queens Park Rangers, bringing to a close a memorable chapter in the club’s history. His time with the Hammers highlighted the value of a steady and committed goalkeeper who could inspire those around him. Though he did not lift major silverware during his spell, his contributions helped shape successful periods and left a lasting impression on the claret and blue faithful.
