Bryan (Pop) Robson was a prolific English centre-forward whose clinical finishing and tireless work ethic made him one of West Ham United’s most popular strikers during two separate spells at the club. Born on 11 November 1945 in Sunderland, County Durham, he arrived at Upton Park in February 1971 as the club’s record signing from Newcastle United. Known for his instinctive goal-scoring ability and sharp movement inside the box, Robson quickly became a fans’ favourite, delivering consistent performances that helped the side compete in the top flight.

In his first spell he netted regularly, including a standout 1972-73 campaign where he scored 28 goals in 46 appearances, earning him Hammer of the Year honours. After a brief return to Sunderland, he came back to West Ham in October 1976 and picked up where he left off, adding another 47 goals across 107 outings in his second stint. Across both periods Robson made 254 appearances and scored 104 goals in all competitions, showcasing remarkable consistency for a forward operating in a physically demanding era. Supporters affectionately called him Pop, a nickname that reflected his approachable personality and the warm connection he built with the Upton Park crowd.

Robson’s time at West Ham coincided with some challenging seasons, and unfortunately he missed out on the club’s major cup successes due to the timing of his transfers. Nevertheless, his dedication and eye for goal left a lasting impression on the supporters who valued his wholehearted commitment and ability to find the net in crucial moments. He departed for the final time in June 1979, moving back to Sunderland, but his contributions during nearly eight years in claret and blue secured his place among the club’s notable forwards of the 1970s.
