Julian Dicks carved out a memorable career as a hard-tackling left-back whose commitment and powerful left foot made him a firm favourite with West Ham United supporters across two separate spells. Born in Bristol on 8 August 1968, the English defender first arrived at Upton Park in March 1988 after starting out at Birmingham City. He quickly settled into the side, displaying an aggressive style of defending paired with an ability to strike from distance and convert penalties with authority. Over his initial period until 1993, Dicks became a regular in the team and helped the club push for promotion, earning recognition as a player who gave everything on the pitch.
A brief move to Liverpool in September 1993 followed, but Dicks returned to West Ham in October 1994 and picked up where he left off. In his second spell, which lasted until 1999, he continued to deliver strong performances that helped the Hammers stay competitive in the top flight. Across both periods he made 326 appearances and found the net 65 times, many from the spot, showcasing his reliability in front of goal for a defender. Fans affectionately dubbed him The Terminator because of his fearless approach and wholehearted commitment that never wavered, even in tough matches. He was also voted West Ham’s Player of the Year on four occasions, underlining the high regard in which he was held by supporters and the club alike.
Dicks’ time at West Ham ended in 1999 after a career spanning more than a decade with the east London side. His contributions during both spells helped stabilise the team and left a lasting impression on the fanbase. Later in life he moved into coaching roles, including a period as first-team coach at West Ham under Slaven Bilić between 2015 and 2017, though he never served as the club’s manager. Today he remains remembered as one of the most passionate and dedicated players ever to wear the claret and blue.
