Billy Bonds stands as one of the most iconic figures in West Ham United’s long history, embodying loyalty, resilience and leadership over nearly three decades at the club. Born in Woolwich, south-east London, he arrived at Upton Park in May 1967 from local rivals Charlton Athletic and quickly established himself as a versatile performer who could excel at right-back, in central midfield or later as a commanding centre-half. Across 21 seasons as a player he racked up a club-record 799 first-team appearances and contributed 61 goals, a testament to his remarkable durability and consistency that saw him feature in more than 700 league matches alone.

Known affectionately as Bonzo by the Upton Park crowd, Bonds became the heartbeat of the side through tireless running, tough tackling and inspirational captaincy. He led West Ham to two FA Cup triumphs, lifting the famous trophy at Wembley in 1975 against Fulham and again in 1980 against Arsenal, becoming the only Hammers skipper ever to achieve that double honour. His commitment never wavered even as the team moved between divisions, and fans repeatedly voted him Hammer of the Year in recognition of his total dedication on the pitch.

After hanging up his boots in 1988, Bonds remained at the club in coaching roles before stepping into the managerial hot-seat in February 1990. In charge for 227 matches, he secured two promotions to the top flight and guided the side through turbulent times with the same no-nonsense approach that had defined his playing days. Though he departed the dugout in August 1994, his influence endured long after, and the club later honoured him with a stand named in his memory at the London Stadium. Billy Bonds passed away peacefully on 30 November 2025 at the age of 79, leaving behind an unmatched legacy of service, silverware and unbreakable spirit that continues to resonate with every generation of West Ham supporters.
