Signed from local Dagenham side (Neville United) on the 16 October 1951, he started playing for west ham reserves but found it much harder to break into the full squad.

His debut finally came against Rotherham in February 1953 after an injury to Malcolm Allison (RIP).
The 1960’s see him partner a young Mr Moore in defence,  helping the Hammers to lift the FA CUP (1963/4) and the following year winning European Cup Winners Cup (1964/65).

In 1959 he won Hammer of the Year,  Brown only won one  full England cap in a 2-1 win over Northern Ireland in November 1959.
